At first glance you might think painting your house exterior by yourself doesn't seem so risky, you might want to reconsider.
- Falls. Falling off of a ladder is by far the number 1 risk of an exterior house painter. Often times extension ladders are used to reach the second or third stories of many houses. Uneven ground and gusty winds (which the Fargo Moorhead area is known for) are 2 key factors to pay attention to when setting up and climbing any ladder. Once your ladder is secure you'll have to carry up your paint bucket/tray and brush, roll on the paint as far out as your arms can reach on either side, climb down the ladder, move it over a few feet, and repeat the process. And that's just for the first coat! Often times people get frustrated with this process. Frustration leads to rushing, rushing leads to accidents.
- Wasp/Hornets nests. Are you allergic to insect stings? If so, you may want to think twice about painting the outside of your house yourself. Even if you're not allergic, who wants to get stung in the first place? Wasp and hornets nests aren't always just hanging off the eaves where you can easily see them, they can also build their nests under siding and in gutters, and by the time you notice them its too late. The last place you want to be attacked by a swarm is at the top of a ladder 2 stories up.
- Sun burns and heat exhaustion. This is one of the more obvious dangers of DIY house painting. You're outside all day in the hot sun and before you know it the back of your neck, ears and arms are fried, but hey you'll get a sweet farmer's tan. Sun burns are easily preventable by using sun screen, but a lesser known danger is heat exhaustion which can lead to the more serious event of heat stroke. Hydration is key when you're outside painting. Most people will forego the necessity of drinking water to get a few more feet painted because its just too frustrating to keep moving the ladder. Here's a professional painter tip: put down the soda, pick up the water jug or sports drink.
