When it comes to getting your house repainted you've got two options, you can either do it yourself or leave it to the pros.
If you decide to tackle this paint job yourself here's some things to consider:
- What supplies do you need to buy? The simple things most people think about when buying paint supplies are brushes, rollers, roller heads, paint trays and drop cloths. But there's more you should look into. Painters tape (what brand? The cheap or expensive stuff? What's the difference?), extendable roller poles for ceilings and high walls, paint screens, extra paint trays (one for each color), what type of brushes should you get (bristles or foam), do you own a ladder so you can cut in at those hard to reach places. As Fargo's best professional house painters, we know and own all of the correct supplies.
- What paint should you buy? Have you ever walked down the paint aisle at your local hardware store and noticed just how many different variations of paint there are? It's a lot! First you should consider what type of finish you want, full gloss, semi-gloss, egg shell, satin or flat. Next, what brand, Behr, Sherwin-Williams, Dutch Boy, Valspar etc... Once you've got your favorite brand then you have to choose from a list of good, better or best options within that brand. Additionally, do you have a paint and primer in one, or will you need to buy your primer separately and if so, how much?
- So you've got your supplies and your paint, now what? At FM Painters we know how important prepping the room is. If you skip this step it could mean bigger headaches down the line. You'll have to either move all of the furniture out of the room, or you'll have to cover it and move it aside. You don't want any paint getting on your carpet or floors, so you'll have to lay down a drop cloth and you better tape it to the wall so it doesn't leave a gap for paint to drip into. Next you'll have to take your painters tape and go around everything you don't want painted, such as windows, doors and electrical outlets. Did you spackle all of your nail holes and wall cracks? No? And you forgot to buy some? Take a trip back to the hardware store! Once your nail holes are filled and the spackle is dry you should... no wait... its lunch time. Ok now that your back from lunch you can begin painting.
- You're gonna feel this tomorrow. Have you ever spent an evening with your neck craned up looking at the ceiling while literally watching paint dry? If you're not used to this here's a short list of places you may get aches and pains: neck, shoulders, lower back, wrists, knees and ankles. You'll be covered in paint and exhausted. I sincerely hope you don't have to work tomorrow. And as you lie in bed that night I hope you're not bothered by the thought of how many more coats you need to apply to get the professional look you really want.
